My friend had is brother-in-law use his computer for some adult entertainment which resulted in the contracting of a virus. It crahed his system and he says it will not start up anymore. Is there anything he can do? His main concern is trying to recover valuable pictures of his kids from the hard drive. Any ideas?

You can remove the hard drive and hook it up to another system. Pull the files. Just make sure you don't execute anything from his hard drive. You could also try to repair the OS. What OS is he running?

Can't remember if he said Vista or 7. I will double check. I will also mention to him about the pulling of the HD idea. Thanks Prime!

Vista and 7 have startup repair utilities. You can access them from the OS DVD. Just boot from the DVD drive.

I would pull the data and then blow that old drive away. You can never be 100% certain that a virus is gone.

A good tool for cleaning up the hard drive when it won't boot is called the ultimate boot cd
Found :http://www.ubcd4win.com/
You burn the image to a disc and then boot from it. It has a ton of tools on it.
